Facts you never knew about inaugurating a ship!
Today the honor of breaking the bottle across the ship's hull goes not to the presidential official, but instead to the ship's sponsor (or ship's godmother). In modern times, ship's sponsors are almost always female, and they tend to be prominent civilians (especially in case of Navy vessels).
The ship's sponsor is usually invited to all special events involving the ship, and may keep in contact with the crew of the ship.
For the pass several years in order to raise awareness of and support a cure for breast cancer, Celebrity Cruises has named several breast cancer survivors to be godmothers of their ships. For their most recent ship, Reflection, the four godmothers of this ship have not only been personally affected by breast cancer, but for the first time are also, Celebrity Cruises employees.
